Privacy policy
1About this policy
Sea-Tech Systems Pty Ltd, ABN 57 614 267 140 ("we", "us", "our") handles your personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Privacy Act) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).
This policy explains how we collect, hold, use and disclose personal information, and how you can access it, correct it or make a complaint.
It applies to information we collect through our website (seatech.net.au), by phone, email, text message or in person, and when we quote for or carry out work across both of our divisions: marine automation and electrical work on vessels, and in-building mobile coverage, Government Radio Network and commercial electrical work.
"Personal information" means information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable, whether or not it is true.
2Personal information we collect
The information we collect depends on how you deal with us. It may include:
- Customers and enquirers: name, phone number, email, billing and site address, job, property and vessel details (such as vessel name, owner, operator or agent), photos of the work site or vessel, and records of our communications.
- Payment and account details: invoice and payment history, and business details such as ABN. Card payments are processed by third-party payment providers, and we do not store full card numbers.
- Subcontractors and suppliers: business and contact details, licence and insurance details, and bank details for payment.
- Job applicants and staff: résumé, work history, qualifications, electrical licence, white card and marine or port access credentials (such as an MSIC), referees, and identification needed to confirm the right to work in Australia.
- Website visitors: IP address, device and browser type, pages viewed and referring site (see section 3).
We do not ordinarily collect sensitive information (for example health, criminal record or biometric information). If it is needed, such as a fitness-for-work or injury report, or a police check for a role, we will collect it only with your consent or where the law permits.
3How we collect it
We collect personal information:
- Directly from you when you request a quote, book a job, fill in a form on our website, call or email us, apply for a job, or deal with us as a supplier.
- From third parties such as builders, property managers, real estate agents, referrers, other contractors and your representatives, where you have authorised them or it is unreasonable to collect it from you directly.
- Automatically when you use our website, through cookies and similar technologies, including analytics tools. Cookies are small files stored on your device. You can block or delete them in your browser settings, although parts of the site may not work as intended.
Where practical, you may deal with us anonymously or by pseudonym, for example when making a general enquiry. We usually cannot do this when providing electrical or marine work, because we need to identify the customer and the site or vessel.
If we receive personal information we did not ask for and are not permitted to keep, we will destroy or de-identify it as soon as practicable.
4Why we collect, hold, use and disclose it
We collect personal information that is reasonably necessary for our business, and we use it to:
- respond to enquiries and prepare quotes;
- schedule, carry out, certify and warranty electrical, marine and related work, including testing, calibration and class certificates;
- invoice, collect payment and manage accounts;
- meet work health and safety, electrical safety, maritime, licensing, tax and record-keeping obligations under Commonwealth, state and territory law;
- engage and pay subcontractors and suppliers, and assess job applicants;
- improve our services and website, and handle complaints; and
- market our services, where permitted (section 6).
We will use or disclose information for another purpose only where you have consented, where you would reasonably expect it and it is related to the purpose we collected it for, or where the law requires or authorises it.
5Who we disclose it to
We do not sell personal information. We may disclose it to:
- our staff, subcontractors and suppliers who need it to carry out the work;
- service providers such as accounting, payment, scheduling, email, website hosting and IT or cloud providers;
- vessel owners, operators, managers and agents, classification societies, and port or shipyard operators, where needed to carry out or certify marine work;
- equipment manufacturers and technical partners, in Australia and overseas, when we need their support for a system we are servicing;
- insurers, professional advisers, and debt collection agencies if an account is overdue;
- regulators and authorities, such as state and territory electrical safety regulators and maritime authorities, where required by law; and
- anyone else you have authorised, or where the law requires or permits.
Overseas disclosure
Some of our service providers, for example cloud storage, email or analytics providers, may store or process information outside Australia. Our marine work can also involve overseas equipment manufacturers and partners, for example in the Netherlands, and vessels or their operators based outside Australia. Before disclosing information overseas, we take reasonable steps to ensure the recipient handles it consistently with the APPs, unless you consent to the disclosure or the law otherwise permits it.
6Direct marketing
We may send you information about our services by email, text message, post or phone where you have consented, or where you would reasonably expect it, such as existing customers. We comply with the Spam Act 2003 (Cth) and the Do Not Call Register Act 2006 (Cth). Every commercial electronic message includes our contact details and a functional way to unsubscribe. You can also opt out at any time by contacting us (section 9), and we will act on the request within a reasonable time.
7Security, retention and data breaches
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. These include password-protected and access-controlled systems, secure cloud services, and restricting access to staff who need it. Paper records are kept in secured premises or vehicles.
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes above or as required by law, including tax, work health and safety, electrical safety, and marine testing, calibration and class certification record-keeping requirements. When it is no longer needed, we destroy or de-identify it.
If we experience a data breach likely to result in serious harm, we will assess it and, where required under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme in Part IIIC of the Privacy Act, notify the affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
8Access, correction and complaints
Access and correction
You may ask to access the personal information we hold about you, or to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading. Contact us (section 9). We may need to verify your identity, and we will respond within a reasonable time, usually within 30 days. We may refuse access in limited circumstances allowed by the Privacy Act, in which case we will explain why in writing.
